  • *Book source ~ Home libraryFrom :Wonderful late-50s illustrations and classic stories such as Heracles, Beowulf, Tristram & Iseult, and Sigurd of the Volsungs. For the most part I enjoyed the stories in this collection, but the writing is simplistic which I guess makes sense since Golden Books are known for their children’s books. Some of the stories I’d heard before though it’s been quite awhile, so the refresher was nice. The rest I’d never heard and found interesting, but not enthr [...]

  • While D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is beloved in this house, I find myself often telling stories around the pictures rather than reading the text to my kids. I know it's blasphemy, but I find D'Aulaires' versions of the classic myths a bit dry. This collection not only has great images but the storytelling is unvarnished and riveting—spiteful dragons, polygamy, wanton gods good stuff Medea! Holy cow. Icarus doesn't just lose his wings and fall into the sea because he's disobedient, he dies [...]

  • Here you have them all - Prometeus, Hercules, Oedipus, Beowulf, Tristan and Isolde, Fafner, Sigurd and Brynhild and many, many more. These are the myths and legends that are the cornerstones of our culture, that have inspired people to great and small deeds through the ages. The illustrations are simply the best illustrations I have seen in a book - artfull, creative and imaginative.

  • This book gave me my unforgettable introduction to Greek and Norse myths at the age of eight. The illustrations by Alice and Martin Provensen were dark and creepy, just the type of thing a budding imagination needs. I wish I still owned my original copy.

  • Was given this book First edition as a kid in 1970. It made a huge impression on me creatively.Absolutely loved the stories/myths and the illustrations are some of the BEST EVER I truly believe.Alice and Martin Provenson did a masterful job with the illustrations. I really don't believe many books of today can match the artful composition and imaginative (non literal) techniques used in these illustrations. 50 years later i still thump through my copy in awe. And i am not exaggerating here! High [...]

  • This was the best book in the whole world I adored it when I was a kid. I checked it out of the library over and over again I read all the stories, even the ones I didn't understand, and pored over the Marie Provensen illustrations. That was where I first met the Greek myths, Homer, Beowulf, Tristan and Iseult, Roland, the Nibelungs, and Rustem and Sohrab I didn't know they were classic stories, and I never got the impression that they were supposed to be good for me I only knew that the book wa [...]

  • This is the best book of my childhood, by far. I must have read it a hundred times. The stories and the art influenced me in so many ways. I want to get it for my kids and am scouring Ebay for it. I should give a shout out to Alice and Martin Provensen, the illustrators, who wrote and illustrated so many amazing children's books. Their version of the Iliad and the Odyssey is fantastic!

  • My mother bought this for me when I was 10. The illustrations fascinated me and I had no idea these stories were "classics." When we began reading these in junior high and high school, it was helpful to already be quite familiar with the stories. My son is just about 7 and we'll be reading these to him soon.

  • I must tell the truth, I did not read all of the text. I am in love with this book for the illustrations. They are phenomenal. I almost didn't pick this up at the library sale. I saw Golden Book and I thought of those horrid little things people collect. But this is truly Golden. I will have to look into the work of Alice and Martin Provensen, the illustrators.

  • A classic from childhood worth tracking down for the amazing illustrations alone. Alice & Martin Provensen were a magic artistic duo of mythic proportions.
