You keep approving me for these books and then I feel guilty because it is impossible to write a long review for some them. Then I feel guilty. (Yeah, I know, but I swear guilt is my default setting. I’m trying to change, I am). Okay, to say that this book is dry would be fair. At the most basic, it is a legal history of birth control and abortion from the later days of Sanger to the 1990s. Undoubtedly, a [...]

  • While I disagree with the perspective from which this book is written, it provides an important and detailed history from which many important lessons can be gleaned.

  • It's actually three different books in one. The first portion of the book is a very detailed, decades-long, activist-driven narrative of the successful effort (to the extent that having to spend decades worth of energy against an uncommonly silly statute constitutes success) against Connecticut's birth control prohibition, culminating in the Supreme Court's Griswold decision. The second portion is a somewhat less comprehensive, lawyer driven narrative of attacks on state abortion prohibitions, c [...]

  • Exhaustive and slightly exhausting. Very informative and written in a fashion that is accessible to the layperson. The first half, describing the run up to and litigation of Griswold, is unsurprisingly (given its 1994 publication date) stronger and more thoroughly researched than the latter portion, discussing the post-Roe landscape and the fall-out from the Casey decision. It does leave one with the impression that this will never really be fully settled case law, and also underscores how very [...]
